Definition of Electric Bike:
The state of South Dakota (SD) defines electric bikes as "electric personal assistive devices." These devices are two wheel devices designed to transport only one person with electric propulsion that is limited to 15mph.
Licensing and Registration:
The state of South Dakota does not have licensing and registration requirements for electric bikes.
Helmets are not required for riders.
Where to Ride:
Electric bikes are exempt from other motor vehicle exclusions and can be ridden without restriction on roadways, bike paths and sidewalks. Electric bike riders must yield to pedestrians and motor vehicle traffic.
