Definition of Electric Bike:

The state of New Jersey (NJ) defines an electric bike as a pedal bicycle with a helper motor that is less than 750W and can attain a speed of no more than 25mph on flat ground.

Licensing and Registration:

The state of New Jersey does require licensing or registration of electric bicycles.

Helmet Law:

Helmets are required for all riders.

Where to Ride:

Electric bicycles may be ridden on roadways in New Jersey by state law. Electric bikes may be ridden on bicycle paths and sidewalks, but must yield to all pedestrian traffic.
