Missouri State Electric Bike Laws, Definition & Legal Operation

Definition of Electric Bike:

The state of Missouri (MO) defines electric bikes as any two or three wheeled device that has an automatic transmission and a motor of less than 750W and is capable of propelling the device at a maximum speed of not more than 30mph on level ground.

Licensing and Registration:

The state of Missouri does not require any license or registration. Insurance is not required, however the state of Missouri defines an electric bike as a motor vehicle for insurance purposes.

Helmet Law:

Helmets are required for all electric bike riders.

Where to Ride:

Electric bicycles may be ridden on roadways where the posted speed limit is less than the traveling speed of the device. Riders must remain as far right as practical, except when making a left hand turn.
