Definition of Electric Bike:

The state of Michigan (MI) does not legally define electric bicycles. Electric bicycles should be operated under the same laws outlined for bicycles which are defined as a device propelled by human power, having 2 or 3 wheels over 14" in diameter according to the Michigan Vehicle Code.

Licensing and Registration:

The state of Michigan does not require license or registration for electric bikes.

Helmet Law:

Any person under 21 years must wear a helmet.

Where to Ride:

Electric bikes may ride on any approved roadways and paths that are available for bicycles. Electric bikes may not ride on state highways or interstates.
